DIY Garden Shed Glow Up With Paint + Palm Thatch Roof
Share

If you’ve ever looked at a plain outdoor storage shed and thought it works… but it’s not exactly beautiful, this one is for you.
I wanted my outdoor space to feel calm, coastal and creative - not like a corner where random storage was hiding. Our timber shed was practical, but it felt unfinished and was exposed to weathering. So I decided to make it more weatherproof and give it a full DIY makeover using paint, hand-painted details and a tropical thatched roof.
The result? A soft blush pink outdoor shed that now feels like a feature piece in the backyard instead of something to hide.
If you’re looking for backyard shed ideas, budget outdoor makeovers, or a renter-friendly garden shed glow up, here’s exactly how I transformed ours.
Why I Decided to Give Our Shed a Makeover
Outdoor storage is essential, especially in smaller spaces, but it often becomes the least attractive part of the yard.
I wanted our backyard to feel like an extension of the home with soft tones, natural textures and a little personality. The shed was functional, but I knew it had more potential.
The Before
Our shed started as a standard natural timber outdoor cupboard. It was useful for extra storage we did't have in our apartment, but visually it blended into the “basic utility” category.
It needed:
- colour
- personality
- texture
- softness
- styling that suited the rest of the yard

What I Used for This DIY Shed Makeover
You don’t need a huge budget for a project like this.
Materials:
- outdoor primer / sealer
- exterior paint in a soft blush pinks
- paint brushes
- pencil for sketching shapes
- decorative handles
- palm thatching for roof detail
- screws / fixing supplies
Styling Items:
- white pots
- cactus / greenery
How I Transformed the Shed
Step 1: Prime the Timber
Because raw timber absorbs paint quickly, I started with a sealing primer to create a smooth base and help the colour last outdoors.
This step is worth doing properly.
Step 2: Paint the Base Colour
I chose a warm soft blush pink because it complements:
- tropical greenery
- warm brick tones
- natural textures
It instantly softened the whole yard.
Step 3: Add Hand-Painted Details
This is where the personality came in.
I painted abstract shapes inspired by coastal vibes, sunshine, palms, shells and relaxed summer living.
The design doesn’t need to be perfect. In fact, hand-painted shapes look best when they feel organic and playful. Phoenix, my 10-year-old son even had fun helping paint the shapes.
Think:
- arches
- waves
- dots
- palms
- shells
- sunshine bursts
- rainbows
- triangles
For this outdoor shed makeover, I used Dulux Weathershield Exterior Low Sheen paint for durability in the Queensland climate.
Colours:
- Taubman's Pale Coral – soft warm blush base tone
- Taubman's Fresh Salmon – deeper peachy pink used for the hand-painted pattern details
The combination created a sun-washed coastal look that feels warm, feminine and playful without being too bright.

Step 4: Add a Palm Thatch Roof
This completely changed the look. I added synthetic palm tree thatching to create a Bali hut vibe.
The natural texture made the shed feel tropical, warm and elevated. It also tied beautifully into the palms and greenery nearby.
This simple addition gave it instant resort energy.
Step 5: Style the Space Around It
Styling matters.
I added white pots, sculptural plants and kept the surrounding palette clean and minimal so the shed became the statement piece.
Now it feels intentional instead of purely practical.
