Bamboo Fence Ideas to Create a Resort-Style Backyard

If there's one DIY project that's completely transformed my outdoor spaces over the years, it's bamboo fencing.

I've now used it in two very different homes - first in our family home and now again in my rental - and each time it has completely changed the feel of the backyard.

People often think creating a resort-inspired space requires a huge budget, expensive landscaping or a brand-new fence. In reality, one of the biggest transformations I've ever made came from simply covering an existing fence with bamboo screening and giving it a fresh white finish.

Whether you own your home or you're renting, bamboo fencing is one of my favourite ways to create a calm, coastal outdoor space.

Why I Love Bamboo Fencing

When I first started designing outdoor spaces, I wanted my backyard to feel less like a suburban fence line and more like a boutique resort.

I wanted texture without heaviness, privacy without closing the space in, and a backdrop that would let plants, furniture and styling shine.

Bamboo screening ticked every box.

It's lightweight, affordable, easy to install and instantly softens an outdoor area. Once painted white, it creates a bright, timeless backdrop that works beautifully with natural textures, greenery and coastal styling.

My First Bamboo Fence Transformation

The first bamboo fence I created was at our family home.

When the neighbor attached a higher fence to the existing timber boundary fence, it looked terrible and painting it wasn't going to fix it. So I found a great way to cover the fence and also suit the relaxed coastal aesthetic I wanted.

Instead of replacing the entire fence, I installed a durable UV protectant bamboo screening over the existing fence and secured it with screws for a more permanent finish.

Once painted white, the whole space felt lighter, brighter and far more inviting.

It became the backdrop for tropical plants, outdoor entertaining and slow afternoons in the garden.

Looking back, it's still one of the most impactful DIY projects I've ever completed.

Recreating the Look in My Rental

When I moved into my rental, one of the first things I noticed was the fencing. There is an existing cream metal fence which isn't terrible, but I really wanted to recreate the same feeling I'd created before, but this time I needed a rental-friendly solution. There are large gaps between the fence that see right into the neighbouring patios, so I knew a screen would not only look stunning, but also give more privacy.

Rather than fixing the bamboo permanently, I chose a lighter bamboo screening and secured it using heavy-duty clear cable ties.

The result surprised me.

It looks incredibly neat, doesn't damage the existing fence and can easily be removed if I ever move.

It's proof that renting doesn't mean you have to settle for an outdoor space that doesn't feel like home.

Why I Painted the Bamboo White

Natural bamboo has a beautiful tropical feel, but painting it white completely changes the mood of a space.

White reflects light, makes smaller courtyards feel larger and creates a clean backdrop that lets every other element stand out.

It pairs beautifully with:

It's the foundation of the relaxed, resort-inspired aesthetic I always come back to.

Homeowner or Renter? You Can Still Create the Look

One of the things I love most about this project is how adaptable it is.

If you own your home, bamboo screening can be securely fixed to your existing fence for a long-lasting transformation.

If you're renting, lightweight bamboo attached with cable ties creates a very similar look without making permanent changes.

The finished result creates that same resort feeling, but the installation method suits your home.

Styling a Resort-Inspired Backyard

For me, the fence is just the beginning.

Once you have a beautiful backdrop, everything else starts to come together.

My Biggest Tip

Don't underestimate the power of improving what you already have.

You don't always need a complete renovation or a large budget to create a beautiful home.

Sometimes covering an old fence, adding fresh paint and introducing a few thoughtful details is enough to completely change the atmosphere of a space.

I've done this project twice now, in two completely different homes, and I'd happily do it again.

Final Thoughts

Creating a home you love isn't about waiting until everything is perfect.

My first bamboo fence transformed our family home.

My second proved that even a rental can feel beautiful with a little creativity.
